After a long season of ups and downs – including lifting the Europa League trophy – the Frenchman is on a journey to give thanks Paul Pogba is visiting Islam’s holiest city, Mecca, to pray, offer his appreciation for a successful season with Manchester United and mark the beginning of Ramadan. The world’s most expensive footballer posted a photo of himself on Saturday with with his bags packed, accompanied by the caption “On my way to go say thank you for this season. See you soon Manchester!”

Pogba is performing the journey of Umrah, a non-mandatory pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia which may be performed at any time of the year. Pogba has visited Mecca before to perform the tradition of the Hajj, the pilgrimage which must be made at least once in every adult Muslim’s life and which is one of the five pillars of the Islamic faith. The Frenchman was struck by personal tragedy earlier this month when his father passed away. Man Utd gave him personal time off but he returned in style, scoring in both the club’s final two games of the season, including the Europa League final.
